Farmer information: Roza Daudi has been farming cacao in Busoka village, southwest Tanzania since 2001. As a 43-year old widow, it is up to her to support her family. Her three acre farm gives her up to 1,500kg of cacao every year, which she sells to the Epicurious Hedgehog. The Epicurious Hedgehog are able to pay a premium price for her cacao crop, as it is used to make cacao nibs - a value-added product, which consumers buy. Unfortunately, this is not the norm for other buyers, who usually buy it to trade and export as a commodity. As Epicurious Hedgehog grows, they are able to buy more from Roza, which will improve her income. She uses her cacao income to meet her family’s daily basic needs, pay her children’s school fees, buy livestock, cover health service cost, and to provide capital for her rice and maize farming activities. Farmers registered with Epicurious Hedgehog receive training in good agricultural practices (following an agroforestry approach and organic principles) so they can harvest a good quality, natural crop. This also protects the environment for future generations.

Even better, the nuts are grown by small farmers and cooperatives in Kenya, some of whom have as few as three macadamia trees. Ten Senses have built a fair and long-term relationship with these farmers, creating both a quality product for customers and sustainable livelihoods for these communities.

Farmer information

Dominic has been growing macadamia for over 40 years, starting with a single tree to shade his coffee trees. Dominic planted his first macadamia tree in the 1970s, as shade for his coffee plants. Years later, he now gets faster growing varieties from Ten Senses to increase his harvest. Over the years he’s used the money to pay school fees and build houses for him and his family on neighbouring plots of land.

As a farmer whose seen prices go up and down, he prefers working with Ten Senses who regularly visit, provide support and buy regularly. The local Ten Senses outreach worker lives nearby and they have a great relationship. They provide him with seedlings of hybrid varieties, which bear nuts quicker. He now waits only four or five years from planting to first harvest.

This year Dominic hopes to harvest up to 600kg of nuts, for which Ten Senses will pay him immediately using mobile money. Prices are currently high for macadamia nuts. However, for Dominic, a fair and stable price is better than sky-high prices which later crash.
